The U.S. National Science Foundation National Radio Astronomy Observatory (NSF NRAO) has named an interim director for the NSF Green Bank Observatory (NSF GBO). Anthony “Tony” Remijan, who previously served as the NSF NRAO’s Assistant Director for Science Support and Research, will lead the NSF GBO.

Remijan is a prominent astronomer and scientist based in Charlottesville, Virginia. After earning his undergraduate and PhD at the University of Illinois (Urbana-Champaign), and teaching and holding positions with NASA, he joined NRAO as a postdoctoral researcher. Quickly rising through the ranks, Remijan became a staff scientist and held leadership positions such as Division Head for Scientific User Support and Research and Deputy Assistant Director for the North American Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array Science Center (NAASC). He played a crucial role in commissioning the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA).

Remijan has made significant contributions to the field of astrochemistry, particularly in the study of complex molecules in space. His research has implications for understanding the chemical precursors to life in stellar nurseries and planet-forming regions. As a leader at NRAO, Remijan is involved in expanding Science-Ready Data Products implementation, overseeing the telescope time allocation process, and developing the science environment to support research needs. His scientific research and expertise extends to NRAO and Green Bank Observatory instruments, including the NSF Green Bank Telescope, and science programs. Remijan’s work continues to advance our understanding of the chemical composition and origins of the universe.

The NSF Green Bank Observatory has recently been reintegrated into the portfolio of the NSF NRAO facilities, under direction from the U.S. National Science Foundation. “Remijan is the right choice to lead the Green Bank Observatory in this new era,” shared Tony Beasley, Director of the NSF NRAO, “With his leadership experience and first-hand knowledge of Green Bank, we’re confident that the Observatory is in good hands in this time of transition.”
