Proposal Call
The Green Bank Observatory (GBO) invites submissions for
large proposal1 observations on the Green Bank Telescope (GBT).
Proposals must be submitted by December 13, 2021 at 22:00 UT.
Proof of concept proposals, pilot programs and novel technique demonstration proposals that would support future large proposals will also be considered.
We would like to remind proposers that their submissions will be peer reviewed by a panel with a wide ranging background in astronomy.
The requested observations will only be scheduled under poor and good weather conditions2. We will not consider scheduling any requests from this call under excellent weather conditions. The technical justification for each proposal must support how the science goals will be achieved with the observations only being scheduled under poor and good weather conditions.
Requests will be restricted to using the DCR, VEGAS and VEGAS pulsar modes unless special permission is received in advance of submission. We encourage submissions for observations in the 21-15 hour LST range, although requests for any LST range will be considered.
Observations must be flexible so that they can be considered to be scheduled at almost any time.
All proposals submitted for this call will be required to have a data management plan.
Novel technique demonstration proposals should provide sufficient details so that a technical assessment can be made to determine if the requested observations can be carried out safely on the telescope. Very limited staff support will be available for these proposals.
We encourage submission of Large proposals whose observing is simple enough to be operator run.

- The Large proposal thresholds are 400 hours for 0-8 GHz, 200 hours for 8-18 GHz and 26.5-50 GHz, and 100 hours for 18-26.5 GHz and above 50 GHz. There is no cap on the total number of hours that a proposal may request. However, there should be a reasonable expectation that the proposals can be completed within a three year time period. ↩︎
- Observations below 8 GHz are typically considered for scheduling in poor weather. Observations between 8-18 GHz and 26.5-50 GHz are typically considered for scheduling in good weather. It is possible that some observations between 18-26.5 GHz and above 50 GHz could be considered for scheduling in good weather and should be justified by the proposers. ↩︎
- Note that the following receiver plans have changed since the 22A proposal call. S-band will only be available for short one or two week campaigns every other month. The C-band receiver will be available whenever the S-band receiver is not available. ↩︎
