Is the Green Bank Observatory closed?

Many staff are working remotely, and can be reached directly via email to help maintain services. Find a list of staff and divisions below.

Is the Green Bank Telescope still operating?

Yes, the GBT is in operation and its schedule can be found here.

Can I still visit the Green Bank Observatory?

The Science Center, café, and gift shop are closed until further notice.

You can shop the gift shop online here.

The grounds are open and available for self-guided walking tours, find a map here. You are also welcome to ride your bicycle and walk our nature trails.

Our instruments are extremely sensitive, and many operate 24-hours a day. Smart phones, digital cameras, fitness trackers, and other electronic devices can interfere with observations. Our scientists thank you for leaving these powered off in your vehicle.

I had a tour/educational program scheduled – now what?

You will be contacted directly about rescheduling your visit.

No new reservations will be taken through the end of 2020.

I am a scientist and am coming for a workshop/site visit – now what?

If you are registered for an upcoming workshop that is now postponed, you will be contacted directly about rescheduling. Several workshops have been adjusted to be virtual workshops online.

If you are scheduled for a site visit to support your ongoing projects, you will be contacted directly with alternative plans.

Is the Observatory still hiring and accepting applications for open positions?

Yes, we will continue recruiting during this time. Candidates will be contacted by email and phone or video interview sessions may be scheduled. For questions regarding open positions and applicant status, please email ude.o1771932428arn@s1771932428elpma1771932428st1771932428
