GBO/AO Single Dish and Observer Training Workshops

Description:

Green Bank Observatory/Arecibo Observatory Single Dish and Observer Training Workshops

Green Bank Observatory, Green Bank, WV

Open only to the Scientific Community and Observers

************ THESE WORKSHOPS HAVE BEEN POSTPONED ************

Over the past few months the global spread of the coronavirus COVID-19 has accelerated, and the US Center for Disease Control (CDC) is predicting widespread infection in this country over the next few weeks/months. Information on the virus can be found at:  https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/index.html.  In  response to this health threat, AUI (the managing organization of the Green Bank Observatory) has adopted travel restrictions, revised workplace practices, and new policies in an attempt to minimize exposure to, and spread of, the virus in the workplace.   Included within this response is the restriction of all travel to and from AUI sites and the postponement of all large meetings, workshops, and gatherings.  This includes the Green Bank Observatory.

As a result, the Green Bank Observatory and Arecibo Observatory Single Dish and Observer Training Workhops, originally scheduled for May 11-20, are being postponed.  We are actively working to find alternative dates and will inform you as soon as new dates have been set.

We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause and thank you for your understanding.

The GBO/AO Single Dish Workshop (NEW DATES TBD) will provide students, post-docs, and experts in other fields of astronomy with knowledge and practical experience in the techniques and applications of single-dish radio astronomy.  The workshop will be based around an intensive series of lectures from experts at the Green Bank Observatory and Arecibo Observatory, as well as hands-on radio-astronomy projects and tutorials.  Topics to be covered include key science areas for single dish radio telescopes, radio emission processes, fundamentals of radio telescopes and radio frequency instrumentation, observing techniques and strategies, calibration and data processing, and complementary use of single dish and interferometric telescopes.

The GBO/AO Single Dish Workshop will be immediately followed by back-to-back observer training workshops (NEW DATES TBD).  Participants will spend two days learning how to remotely observe using the Arecibo Observatory and two days learning to observe using the Green Bank Telescope.  The GBT and Arecibo Observer Training Workshops will provide the essential skills and knowledge needed to use the GBT and Arecibo and maximize their scientific output.  After completing the workshops, an attendee will be certified to use both telescopes as a remote observer. The workshops will focus on hands-on training in the observing techniques most relevant to participants (e.g. spectral line, continuum, pulsar, radar, VLBI, etc.).

Participants may attend all three workshops, or sign up for any workshop individually.

We are sorry but registration for this event is now closed.
