Celebrating the 90th Anniversary of Radio Astronomy

Pictured above: Green Bank Observatory is home to a replica of the rotating directional antenna that Carl Jansky designed and used to first detect radio waves from an extraterrestrial source. This source was later discovered to be Sagittarius A*, the supermassive black hole at the center of the Miky Way Galaxy!

Join us for a day of radio contacts to celebrate the 90th anniversary of Karl Jansky’s announcement of his discovery of radio noise coming from the center of the Milky Way Galaxy. Ham radio operators are invited to make contact with members of the National Radio Astronomy Observatory and the Green Bank Observatory as they conduct a Special Event Amateur Radio Station.

Saturday, April 29th and Sunday, April 30th.

The special event station (call sign W9GFZ) will be active from 1400Z-2359Z (10:00AM- 7:59 PM EDT/ 8:00am – 5:50pm MDT) both days. Operators from Charlottesville, VA, Socorro, NM, and Green Bank, WV will operate the station. Look for us on these frequencies over the course of the event:

  • 3.800 – 4.000 MHz
  • 7.175 – 7.300 MHz
  • 14.225 -14.350 MHz
  • 21.275 – 21.450 MHz
  • 28.300 – 29.700 MHz
