Is the Green Bank Observatory closed?

Many staff are working remotely, and can be reached directly via email to help maintain services. Find a list of staff and divisions below.

Is the Green Bank Telescope still operating?

Yes, the GBT is in operation and its schedule can be found here

Can I still visit the Green Bank Observatory?

The Science Center, café, and gift shop are closed until further notice.

The grounds are open and available for self-guided walking tours, find a map here.

Please note that all operations and observations with active telescopes will continue on site. Prohibitions on the use of digital cameras, cellphones, fitness tracking devices or any device utilizing blue-tooth technology are still in effect. Please leave those devices in your cars or at home when you visit.

I had a tour/educational program scheduled – now what?

You will be contacted directly about rescheduling your visit.

No new reservations will be taken through May.

I am a scientist and am coming for a workshop/site visit – now what?

If you are registered for an upcoming workshop that is now postponed, you will be contacted directly about rescheduling. Dates for rescheduled workshops will be shared later this fall.

If you are scheduled for a site visit to support your ongoing projects, you will be contacted directly with alternative plans.

Is the Observatory still hiring and accepting applications for open positions?

Yes, we will continue recruiting during this time. Candidates will be contacted by email and phone or video interview sessions may be scheduled. For questions regarding open positions and applicant status, please email

What about programs scheduled for this summer?

As of this time, we are planning to return to our regular on site operations and calendar of events.  Registration for these events remain open.  If, at a later point, an event requires cancellation or rescheduling a full refund will be offered.
