SUMMARY:Fast Radio Bursts: A Cosmic Mystery!
DESCRIPTION:\nJoin us on Wednesday, March 20, at 3:30 PM for a FREE public lecture with celebrated astronomers from WVU!\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFast Radio Bursts (FRBs) are one of the most exciting recent discoveries in the field of radio astronomy, and they were discovered by astronomers right here in West Virginia! Most FRBs happen faster than you can blink an eye, and in that time they blast out more energy than our sun produces in several days. In spite of this spectacular behavior, we still don’t know what they are.\n\n\n\nJoin us to hear more about this beguiling cosmic mystery from West Virginia University Professors Duncan Lorimer and Maura McLaughlin, 2 of the 3 astronomers awarded this year’s Shaw Prize ( https://www.shawprize.org/laureates/2023-astronomy/ ) for the 2007 discovery of FRBs. \n\n\n\nThis is science as it happens!\n\n\n\nPublic LectureWednesday, March 20th at 3:30 PMScience Center AuditoriumScience Center and Gift Shop will open at 2:30; brief public reception to follow\n\n\n\nStudent groups are also invited to join us for an afternoon of tours and activities! The lecture and reception are free and open to the public, but registration is required for groups. Learn more and register here ( https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSfUhyPdDvqkMeFaf_hEa8wfObvTzqrveEijx1hDaqXMWUD3NQ/viewform?usp=sf_link ), or paste the following link into your browser:https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSfUhyPdDvqkMeFaf_hEa8wfObvTzqrveEijx1hDaqXMWUD3NQ/viewform?usp=sf_link ( https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSfUhyPdDvqkMeFaf_hEa8wfObvTzqrveEijx1hDaqXMWUD3NQ/viewform?usp=sf_link )  \n\n\n\nCan’t make it to Green Bank? Join us remotely and participate in the Q&A. https://us02web.zoom.us/j/81713705651\n\n\n\nThe recording will also be posted on our YouTube channel a day or two after the lecture. \n\n                function masterqrCurrentPAge(){new QRCode(document.getElementById("masterqrPost"),{text: "https://greenbankobservatory.org", width: 133, height: 133, colorDark: "#000000", colorLight:"#ffffff", PI: "#000000", PO: "#000000", AI: "#000000", AO: "#000000", PI_TL: "#000000", PO_TL: "#000000", logo: "", logoWidth: 55, logoHeight: 55, logoBackgroundTransparent: true, backgroundImage: "", dotScale: "0.6", timing: "#000000", timing_V: "#000000", backgroundImageAlpha: "0.3",});}masterqrCurrentPAge();
